These are the best running shoes I've ever owned, trail or road. They made it through training, a half marathon, 13.1 mile Spartan Beast mud run, and several washings. Then I gave them to my 10-year-old stepdaughter and she wore them to school every day for months. Then her mother wore them for a while before my step-daughter took them back. Finally, they got a hole in the top. No shoe can withstand the beating provided by an active 10-year-old at recess.The soles protect your feet from the elements, but allow freedom of foot movement allowing you to run naturally. There is a pad on the heel of these that keeps the shoe from rubbing on my heel which isn't available in the later models.

I didn't think I liked these shoes, but surprisingly I do. A friend of mine owns them and I wanted to have them too. I like the minimal less bulky look which is great if you travel (they don't take as much space in suitcase). I run rugged trails with a lots of roots in a variety of terrain. I have not used them in the winter yet so I can't evaluate their performance in cold weather or snow. I am thinking they will be very cold. I also use them in the gym for cross training. I know I am not supposed to...but I like them that much.I didn't have shin pain or other type of pain associated with less support, so I am thinking that NB has some minimal shock absorption in the molded sole. I am a Saucony loyal buyer, but a while ago I also had New Balance trail which I purchased on sale in an outlet. The difference between the two brands was that New Balance did not seem to have a lot of support and cushioning compared to Saucony. However, I still wore those trail shoes for years. They eventually lasted me 4 times longer than my trainers shoes and I truly liked them. I have tried to run bear foot, and then with aqua shoes, trying to avoid spending money for the minimalist shoes which in my opinion have been way too overpriced. In both cases it was a disaster. Of course coming from the super cushioned- motion control shoes made by Saucony this was a tough switch.I would suggest this particular model to those folks who do not want to spend a fortune in minimalist shoes, and just want to try them to get a feel for it.If you don't like them you can always use them to go to the gym.The shoes perform well for me. They don't seem too stiff and don't allow hard pointy rocks to be felt thru. They also feel very light so they can be used at the track for speed work. I never experienced slippery feeling, perhaps I was lucky or I was simply using them in enough gripping surface. I am assuming in mud they would be very bad....like most shoes.

Thin and a little stiff

I expected the material to be a little softer. The tongue is a bit stiff and the back of the ankle causes a blister if I wear "no show" socks. They feel fine when wearing ankle socks but I thought a New Balance shoe would be a bit better made than the less expensive off brands I have had to buy in the past because I wear a size 12M.
